Business Not many business owners look at the back of their buildings and see a blank canvas. But Doug Winbigler saw more than concrete when he looked at the massive wall that surrounds Amish Originals Furniture Company¼s rear entrance. He knew the space had the perfect dimensions to become much more than a back door. The concept for the mural began in 2003, and by the summer of 2004, with help from the community and several local artists from Gallery 202, Partners in Art, the first strokes of paint were brushed onto the rear wall of Amish Originals. The mural was designed to resemble Amish Originals¼ storefront. In each of the store windows, additional mural sponsors¼ names are featured. In order for the littlest of hands to wield paintbrushes and take part in the fun, a children¼s art garden was created on the right side of the mural at kids¼ height. The kids filled the garden with brightly colored flowers and plenty of bugs and butterflies. Look for the „History of Westerville¾ song located high on the right side of the mural, and a huge tree carved with a heart on the left. Also featured is a community calendar listing the annual events that occurring in Westerville. Doug says he hopes to see more local businesses follow suit and turn more Uptown walls into pieces of art. According to Renee Kropat, president and founder of Gallery 202, he¼ll likely get his wish. „We are also in the process of designingämore murals Uptown and other public art. We are going to try and present them to the Uptown Review Board in the next few months. The two locations we are looking at are Westerville Auto and the Westerville Grill. The main goal of the mural project was not only to make use of an unused, unattractive space in town, but also to create a piece of art that could be enjoyed by everyone. The creativity and tight bond of the community can be seen through the bright colors and fun imagery used in the mural. For more information on Westerville's public art projects, click here.
