US Post Office selects a special award for the Mailbox Art Gala

The mailboxes currently being exhibited at Gallery 202 to help raise money for Concord Counseling has just been given a US Post Office Special Award. Dee Dee Miller, a long time postal carrier in Westerville judged the mailboxes based on the theme of staying connected and on their ability to be used functionally as a mailbox. Dee Dee has delivered the mail for the post office for 14 years in the Westerville area.

Dee Dee chose the "Winding Women"s Way" mailbox to be named the Post Office Award because of how the stamps and the associated story related to the theme. "Just reading the write up, helped me to see how much work was put into this mailbox," she said. The mailbox created by Connie Wood is covered in postage stamps on a stand of found objects each with their own meaning. From her write up, Connie states ³Letters in the mail are a gift of someone's time. They cheer me. They are a treat to savor, a visit from a friend, a spirit connection to someone you care about. I like writing letters, thinking of the receiver, speaking to someone as though we are enjoying a cup of coffee at the kitchen table."

Honorable mention went to Pat Bendick for her "Travel" mailbox covered with postcards from different places, also with cancelled stamps and memories of different travel experiences.

These winners along with all the mailboxes will be on display at Gallery 202, 38 N. State St. until Oct 14 and then will be a part of the Champagne and Chocolate Gale on Oct 15, at Concord Counseling to benefit the ASAP (suicide prevention) program. Tickets on sale now $25, $30 at the door.
