Richard SimonI started working in stained glass in the late 70¹s. I worked mainly in lamps and stained glass panels. I stayed with the stained glass for about 15 years. I moved into photography and specialized in underwater photography next. It not only allowed me to explore an entirely new world, it also got me to a lot of very nice islands around the world. After the photography I renewed an interest in lapidary that had begun in my early childhood when I got a rock tumbler for Christmas. This time I specialized in cutting and polishing semi-precious and precious gemstone. It was on a trip to New Orleans where I happened into a glass working demonstration in the warehouse district that got me interested in glass again. As I watched them design and shape the glass without the lead used in stained glass, I decided that I would like to create in glass again without the restrictions of using the lead channels. I started taking classes in glass fusing shortly after that and have travel throughout the US taking additional courses in the various techniques used in fusing. I enjoy the ability to combine the various colors and types of glass without having the distinct lines between the pieces. I also like the ability to create in three dimensions that fused glass provides. I am hoping eventually to add glass blowing to combine with and compliment the work that I do now. |
