Gallery for a Day Event is a continuation of last yearı's Arts Westerville event originally sponsored by the Arts Council of Westerville in conjunction with Gallery 202 and the Uptown Merchants. This event was designed to offer a chance for local artists to display their artistic abilities in dance, music and the visual arts while encouraging visitors to meet with them and to also enjoy the unique shoppes of Uptown Westerville. This year, the event continues to offer the same opportunity for art patrons and artists to mingle within the shoppes. Thirty Uptown Businesses have offered to play host to artists within their walls or under tents outside their doors (giving demonstrations.) But this year, the event has expanded to include more interactive activities for all ages. "Today I am the Artist" is the theme, aptly named, not only for the activities to be held on this day but also to say thanks to all those who helped with a very special Uptown Project.
For the past two months, the general public has been asked and has been overwhelmingly involved in painting the Community Mural hosted by Amish Original Furniture Co. and sponsored by Krogers, Hometown Service Center, Flowers by Doris, Westerville News and Public Opinion, Pasquales Italian Restaurant, Otterbein College, The Curiosity Shop, Westerville Commercial Bank, Marge Fenton and Bill Bishop. Over 75 artists of all ages and abilities, under the guidance of Gallery 202, Partners in Art artists, helped to create a mural approx 75 feet wide by 20 feet high depicting an early 1900 historical scene. Artists from Florida, Illinois and around central Ohio all added their paint strokes including our own Mayor Mike Hyeck. This mural will be "presented" to the community at 11 am on September 18, 2004. Located at the rear of Amish Originals North Store in the parking lot off of East Main St, we encourage you to bring your camera, stand "in" the mural and become a part of this community pride.
With the help of a Neighborhood Arts Grants from the GCAC, Gallery for a Day will also offer such family activities as a Chalk Walk for budding artists (1-3pm), and Making an Art Car with Ramona Moon from 10 - 5pm. Art in the Alley Activities sponsored by the creative fellows from Rising Moon will feature the acoustical sounds of Brian Alton, Gary Puckett, Mark Fitzharris, Jason Quicksal, Justin Graham, Brant Gipson and Kate Pivoriunas. Art in the Alley is located in the small alley next to Rising Moon and Michaelıs Pizza off East College in Uptown. In addition, several Art in the Alley artists will display their works. Wandering patrons can also hear from the sweet sounds of The Barbershop chorus as they wander through uptown stores and alleys.
Many artists and Uptown Shoppes have also contributed items for a silent auction. The art doors signifying "Opening Doors in Uptown" seen around the Uptown area for the past several months will be a part of the auction items. Monies generated will goes towards increasing the awareness in, the amount of and the activities involved in creating a community spirit for public art in Westerville. Special T-shirts designed to tell every one that "Today I am the Artist" will also be available.
So come, wander around the Uptown Shoppes, look for balloons that signify artist locations and have fun creating and enjoying art, artists and Uptown.
Information on the artists, their locations and pictures of the mural can be found on www.artswesterville.com. Or call Renee @614-882-7709 for more details or email Renee@gallery202online.com.
INFORMATION ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS GRANT:
Through a generous grant from the Ohio Arts Council and the Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, GCAC recently completed a study of community arts education programs in Franklin County. The results of that study proved that throughout our county people are showing tremendous interest and enthusiasm for artistic experiences of all kinds. The Franklin County Board of Commissioners and GCAC recognize the value of arts activities of an essentially recreational, avocational, or therapeutic nature and the Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Program is designed to help support these activities. Whether itıs participating directly in the production of visual art, literature, music, theatre, or dance; attending local arts events such as live performances, festivals and exhibitions; or participating in educational workshops, classes, seminars, it's clear the people of all walks of life and all ages throughout Franklin County want more arts experiences.
The Franklin County Neighborhood Arts program is a partnership of county government, state government, and the Greater Columbus Arts Council to support artistic development within a wade variety of organizations and improve the aesthetics and quality of life in neighborhoods all over Franklin County. With support from the Franklin County Board of commissioners, this program directly impacts a variety of deserving audiences at a time when interest in leisure, cultural enrichment, and continuing education is growing by leaps and bounds. (from the guidelines of Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Program - (614) 224-2606)
