At the Drive-In

Rural New Jersey
the late 1950's
Old family traditions
dating is chaperoned

If parents cant go
the kids tag along
big sister and beau
kids in tow

We pile into a big
Buick Roadmaster
Joe takes us to the Drive-In
to see a double feature

Under the big screen
a playground full of equipment
the kids pile out of the car
swings, slides, teeter-totter

The night sky darkens
the beam of light lights up the screen
Previews of coming attractions
Cartoons to be seen

Back to the car
by way of the refreshment stand
popcorn, candies, and soda
hot dogs in hand

The movie begins...
the speaker hanging in the window
we sit in stillness and watch
in amazement and awe

Feature one we all watch
then the intermission...
another visit to the refreshment stand
then back to the car

Feature two begins
this is too much to take
the kids all sleep in the back
no one is awake

Then in the middle of the night
the speaker goes quiet
the screen darkens
the movies are over

Once silent engines awaken with a roar
The speakers are placed in their stands
the windows are closed
the parade home begins

With a cloud of dust
the evening comes to an end
another memory made
at the Drive-In

Concept:

Provide public art in the areas around uptown that are not normally seen directly from the main route (State St.). By placing art in various areas around the Uptown District, the public will be encouraged to Wander Westerville and seek not only the sights but also notice/participate in businesses on off streets as well as on the main street.

The Public Art programs increase community pride, foster community partnerships, provides visitor attraction and is just plain fun by having the community at large become an intergral part of the whole event.

The Uptown Mural Project 2004 completed in September 2004 gave the Uptown Area a large mural as a corner stone to this project. The concept is to provide not only murals but sculptural elements, functional and decorative to the Uptown Area.

The two murals that we would like to complete this summer are at Westerville Automotive on East Main Street and the Westerville Grill on South State State. More info to follow.
