Not many kindergartners have their art shown in a real gallery.

Yet those who attend Duxberry Park Alternative Elementary School ‹ and their schoolmates ‹ can see their works this month at Gallery 202, Partners in Art.

And, this weekend, the Westerville venue will host a reception for the artists.

Duxberry Park teaches through an arts program, in which music, dance, drama and visual art are used to reinforce academic lessons ‹ based on the notion that youngsters learn in different ways.

All students, even those in special education, take part in the program, said art teacher Mike White, who helped organize the exhibit.

The partnership with the gallery grew out of a residency that Renee Kropat, president of Gallery 202, had two years ago at the school.

When she saw Duxberry Park on the Columbus Public Schools list of possible closings (before it earned a one-year reprieve to boost enrollment), Kropat suggested the show to promote the school.

The display, White said, includes pieces from all grade levels and abilities.

"We have landscapes, one-point perspectives," he said. "We have a three dimensional project that is a color-value study. The . . . (special-education) classes made CD snowmen, popcorn snowmen and noodle snowmen."

Included, too, is a sculpture made of milk cartons by the kindergartners.

At the reception, fourth-graders will perform a dance they created ‹ inspired by Vincent van Gogh¹s Starry Night ‹ and fifth-graders will present a drama they wrote.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday at 38 N. State St., Westerville. Call the gallery (614-890-8202) or the school (614-365-6023).

Exhibit is open until Feb 25th,
Hours: Wednesday 12-8
Thursday and Friday 12-4
