Young Artists Exhibit Work at Uptown Westerville's Gallery 202by Kriss K. Galloway The artistic works of two Westerville students currently are on display at Gallery 202 in Uptown Westerville - the first exhibition of its kind at the co-operative gallery. "When Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc., located a space to offer workshops, classes and exhibits, we also wanted to provide a special program for local youth talent to promote their art," said Renee Kropat, Gallery 202ıs owner and curator. "One of our co-op gallery goals is to provide monthly art exhibits to students and provide a program to encourage the growth and participation in the arts at any age level." The premiere artists for this new program are Brittany Sitz, a freshman at Central High School, and Chelsey Lilley, a fifth-grade student at Wilder Elementary. Chelsey's favorite medium is clay and three-dimensional materials, and enjoys creating forms. "Chelsey says, 'Art doesn't always have to be on a piece of paper'," said Coleen Miller, her art teacher at Wilder for the past four and a half years. "Chelsey always has been very focused and becomes deeply and emotionally involved in each assignment. She puts her heart and soul into everything she does," said Miller. Brittany's introduction to public art came a few summers ago, when she assisted with the first Uptown Mural in 2004. "Brittany always has had a good eye for color. Most of her pieces involve lots of color, whether itıs ceramics, oil pastels, macramé or watercolor," said her mother, Kelly. "She has loved art since she was a pre-schooler. It was noticeable to her early teachers and her father and I that she had an eye for color and design, even her sidewalk chalk creations at three and four-years-old were special." Art for the monthly student exhibits is chosen through a jurying process. Students are recommended by their teachers, school administrators, parents, or themselves. Any child at any grade level may be considered for an exhibition. Support for the exhibits comes from sponsors in Brittany's case, a very special Thank You to the Liebert Corporation.
