The April is Arts Month celebration in Westerville will kick off this weekend with a special reception at Gallery 202 Partners In Art Inc., 38 N. State St.

"Our main purpose is we want to tell the community that a lot of arts are already located and happening in this community," said Renee Kropat, owner and curator of Gallery 202 Partners in Art Inc. "Last year, former mayor (Michael) Heyek named the celebration to focus on the arts in the month of April, and there are many events that would be happening anyway that this will include."

Saturday's reception, organized by the Arts Council of Westerville, will start at 1 p.m. and will include a welcome to guests and an introduction of the arts month banners that will adorn the city by Westerville Mayor Diane Fosselman. The mayor will paint the final brush stroke on one banner and hang the last four banners on North State Street, according to Kropat.

"The whole point of the April-long celebration is to bring as much attention to all the wonderful people, artists and organizations that promote art," said Dianne Katzenmoyer, president of the Arts Council of Westerville. "And that includes not just the type of things you'd think of, not just public art, but there is so much we do in Westerville, different expressions of beauty, so much that is an expression of art."

Activities for the day include:

* Emerson and Whittier student art show, 9 a.m. to noon, at Commerce Bank, 17 N. State St.

* Photographs by Joel Whitaker, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fisher Gallery, Roush Hall, Otterbein College, 27 S. Grove St.

* Kids' open house from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Westerville Arts Center, 250 N. State St.

* Westerville school district art show, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gallery 202 Partners In Art, 38 N. State St.

* Annual Chair is Art Exhibit, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gallery 202 Partners in Art Inc.

* Beyond the Rainbow child art exhibit, 1:30-2:30 p.m. at David Myers Art Studio and Gallery, 3 W. Main St.

* Barbershop Sing, 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Carmel St. Ann's Hospital Maternity Pavilion, 500 S. Cleveland Ave.

* Faculty recital series performance by soprano Rosalind Crew, 8 p.m. Riley Auditorium, Battelle Fine Arts Center, 170 W. Park St.

A self-guided art hunt game will be revealed Saturday, along with music performed by students from the Chamber Music Connection.

"This will be a fun way to bring recognition to the arts and let people discover them on a self-discovery basis," Katzenmoyer said.

The scavenger hunt will continue through the month of April, she said. Participants can pick up a list of 12 clues at Saturday's event, or download a separate list of 21 questions from http://www.artsconnect.info

There may be prizes for the winners at the end of the scavenger hunt, according to Kropat.
