Passages V: Staying Connected.Mailboxes become ART and at the same time help to raise needed funds for Concord Counseling Services, At School Assistance Program. Press Release: Passages V: Staying Connected ‚ Champagne and Chocolate Gala Passages V takes on a whole new meaning for the artists involved in this Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc. art program. The Passages series began as a way for artists of different abilities and skills to come together and put on an art exhibit that would showcase their talents and provide a sense of cohesiveness among a group of primarily women. The usual program was to create a piece of artwork to a specific personal theme, exhibit it, then take it home. The theme of this current Passages will not only dictate the direction of the art but in this case provided an opportunity to step out of our normal artistic bounds. This time the artists will be creating their artwork specifically to "let it go" and to help raise needed funds for Concord Counseling Services At School Assistance Program (ASAP) to prevent teen suicide. Over the past several years, Westerville has experienced teenage suicides that have left the community stunned. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people; each year, hundreds of youths commit suicide and many contemplate suicide daily. This tragedy deeply affects its victims: parents and relatives, neighbors and teachers ‚ in fact, a child's suicide impacts the whole community. The ASAP program places counselors in schools when and where kids need help most. Counselors help educators and administrators identify troubled kids and provide counseling service to about 400 youths a year. Youth suicide is preventable, but we can not fight this alone. A group of artists in Westerville is joining this fight. Recycled mailboxes were given to the artists with the only stipulation that it be related to "Staying Connected." In September, 2006 the finished mailboxes will be displayed at Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc. gallery for the public to enjoy and begin a silent auction bidding. Each artist is asked to provide a written statement on their art. The mailboxes will be judged and depending upon the final number of artworks received, up to 10 will be selected for a live auction to be held on October 15th, 2pm, during our Champagne and Chocolate Gala at Concord Counseling Services. Music, great refreshments, great fun art and a live auction emceed by our own Cabot Rea from NBC 4 and an artist in his own right ..a professional singer and actor. Tickets are available now $25/person and $30 at the door. We want to thank Telecom Products Corporation for their support and invite others to help us in sponsoring this event. For more information please email
Invite for the next passage meeting: We have all 40 mail boxes delivered. YEA! I hope to keep trying to put the updates on the web but am painfully human so I hope this note helps too. Our gala event is set for October 15th from 2 pm (to 4 or maybe later if it is a grand success!). We have researched out a large tent, what tables we may want and the glassware. We have also have some preliminary successful contacts with food vendors and a possible music group or two! We now begin the sponsorship phase and I have included a flyer ‚ pass it on to any one who you think might want to be a part of this event. As we have been talking about in our recent get togethers, the final gala will be a ticketed event and the tickets to the general public are $25 each for great refreshments. For the artists, we are asking that the artist gets in free if they sell 4 tickets at half price ‚ that is essentially receive five tickets for $50. But to be honest, if we get great sponsorships, I hope to give free tickets to our artists. So please keep that in mind. We figure we will need a minimum of $2000 to put on this event not including entertainment and some of the food and relaying on lots of volunteers. Our next get together is planned for May 20th at 2pm at Concord Counseling Services. Our goal to help raise money for their children's programs especially to prevent teenage suicides (ASAP program) is more relevant than ever with the recent loss of one of our own teenager from Westerville South. My son knew this young man and along with so many others, was deeply affected by his suicide. Concord Counseling is located at 774 Park Meadow Road ‚ off Schrock in Westerville. 614-882-933. And for more staying connected, I've included a pin created by one of our own talented young students from Westerville North ‚ Julia Bennati. Wear it on May 20th. Thank you everyone!
Passages Meeting - Saturday, April 20th, 2006 We discussed the upcoming Gala, we have a tent and will be searching for sponsors. Tickets are $25/each and include admission and refreshments. We will meet next month May 20th, at Concord Counseling. Passages Meeting ? Saturday, March 18, 2006 This is the 5th year for the passages group. This year¼s passages group will be a little different than those in the past. Each artist will be donating their finished artwork to be auctioned off. The money is going to be split between the gallery and Concord, the Suicide Prevention Agency. Meetings will be held once a month, but are not required. The meeting began by going around the room and making introductions. Rules were passed out. The items will be displayed at the gallery for about 30 days with the final gala being Sunday, October 15. This celebration will be held outside under the tent. The ticket cost is $25. It will be a champagne, chocolate, and strawberries event. We need to get as much donated as possible. Renee passed out the rules for this years¼ passages group including dates for completion. You can put decorations on the mailbox. It can be functional, but doesn¼t have to be. You don¼t have to use the whole mailbox. You can take it apart and use only one piece if you like. You can smash it with a hammer or whatever else you can think of. The only real stipulation is that it has to be able to fit through a standard door opening. The theme this year is "Staying Connected". Renee has set up a team blog. Everyone will receive an invitation in the next 3-4 days and you must say "yes" to the invite in order to have access to the blog. The blog can be used to share progress pictures, ideas, or ask questions. If you have adhesive questions you can try a website called thistothat.com. This is a very easy to use website. Another flier was distributed regarding Share Your Art Day 2006 in Westerville. The next meeting is April 22, 2006 @ 2:00 p.m. at the gallery. Original Notes Our fifth Passage series takes on another unique twist. For this Passages, we are asking artists to create a piece of artwork, utilizing the Mail Box as the base form. Staying connected is the theme. How do you stay connected, to whom and perhaps why?
Rules are simple. Construction/media: Up to the artist, must fit though a standard size door, any medium is ok. Pick up the Mailboxes by January 31st but we will have a get together in January to distribute the mailboxes and have some fun. Mailboxes may be picked up now if you wish Deliver to the Gallery: Aug 25th, 2006 When completed, all the artworks will be on display in September, 2006 at Gallery 202, Co-op. We will then have a special fundraising event with Concord Counseling Services ( in Westerville - TBA). All the completed artworks will be auctioned off in a silent and a live auction. We have 40 mailboxes to be distributed to artists. During the month exhibit in September, we will choose 10 of them for the live auction. All proceeds from the auction are distributed equally between Concord Counseling and Gallery 202, Partners in Art, inc. Here is the list of current Passages V artists
