Scholarships / Westerville Concert Band

The Westerville Concert Band awarded scholarships to a student from each of our high schools' instrumental music programs at our spring concert, April 23. I am attaching the speech that I gave at the concert in awarding the scholarships. I'd be glad to give you more information if needed. Thank you. Terri Siebert, Executive Board Chairperson, Westerville Concert Band

"Music is a lifelong pursuit. We in the Westerville Concert Band are testimony to such a statement. It is our desire to support and to encourage the love of music in our community’s youth by awarding a $100 scholarship to an instrumental music student from each of our 3 high schools, to be used to help continue their music studies. I would like to ask Kathleen Murray, Dustin May, and Tom Calhoun to come forward now to the stage.

Westerville is blessed with 3 excellent high school instrumental music programs. We’d like to thank James Defrancesco, band director at South, Dan Laciano, director at North, and Jason Jackson, band director at Central, for their assistance with these awards. Each selected a student from his program to be honored today.

Kathleen Murray is a senior string bass player at South. She plays in both the jazz band and the orchestra. Following graduation this June, Kathleen will continue her pursuit of music with a major in jazz studies at Michigan State University this fall.

Dustin May is a sophomore percussionist at North. He plays in the wind ensemble, the jazz orchestra, marching band, the pit orchestra for musicals and has filled in for the show choir, the Notables. Dustin is committed to excellence in his musical skills and performance.

Tom Calhoun is a senior percussionist at Central. He is currently the drum set player for the top jazz ensemble and is deeply involved in many aspects of music, including marching and concert bands. He is accomplished in piano as well. Tom will continue his passion for music at the Cuyahoga Community College Jazz Program in the fall.

Please join me in congratulating each of these fine young musicians. We wish them the best in their continued pursuit of music."

Breakfast with the Arts! Uptown Westerville

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to get involve with the arts, listen to music, hear a vocalist, or observe an artist in a small and fun venue? Now add time to hear each artist discuss their craft and answer all your questions as part of a relaxing morning before you begin your Saturday chores!

Come to Gallery 202, Co-op in Uptown Westerville on May 20th, 2006 for the first of six summer series performance events entitled “Breakfast with the Arts”. Join us as we welcome our first performer, Michael Isla, our own local classical guitar player. He brings not only his passion for his musical craft but a desire to encourage others to learn about and enjoy his music. Being of South American Heritage, Michael is a strong advocate of Hispano American music. Although his musical background is more tradition Latin American music, he enjoys performing cutting edge works from American composers.

Oh, did we mention that we will be serving coffee and refreshments for everyone’s enjoyment.
And did we mention that this is free to the general public!

Join us every 3rd Saturday for the next six months from 10:00am to 12:00pm and experience different performing artists and hear about their craft. What a great way to begin a day of Uptown Westerville Adventures!

We are seeking sponsors for each Saturday event to cover performance cost. As a 501.c3 community arts organization, donations to Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc. are tax deductible.
