Share Your Art Day

Be a part of ‘Share Your Art Day- 2006’ in Westerville

Here’s how it works: Decorate the front of a specially marked postcard available at Gallery 202, Co-op. 38 North State St, Westerville Ohio 43081, 614-0-8202, www.shareyourart.org.

Return the completed postcard, along with your $5.00 entry fee, to Gallery 202 Co-op, 38 N. State Street, Westerville, OH 43081 between April 1st and May 31st, 2006. You may decorate the postcard any way that you wish – paint, draw, add buttons etc. but we ask that you keep it to the basic size of the postcard. Please place it in a protective envelope (padded if needed) and return or mail to Gallery 202 Co-op.

Gallery 202 will stamp your postcard with a unique registration number. We will photograph and record each postcard received and place an image on the web site. Each “artwork” will then be placed in a protective clear bag with an explanation of the Share Your Art Day program. Instructions will also be provided on how to give a report on where the artwork was found and where it is now.

On specific date(s) during the summer of 2006, these works of art will be placed in a variety of places throughout the Westerville area. Periodically log onto www.shareyourart.org to get updates about where your artwork might be.

We will accept postcards after May 31, 2006 but those received after May 31, 2006 will not be placed in the community until a later time.

When Share Your Art Day arrives, search the Westerville area to find yours or any other artist’s art postcard. When you find it, log onto www.shareyourart.org and fill out the Postcard finder’s form with the postcard’s registration number, and the date, time and place where you found the postcard. Tell us what you plan to do with the artwork – send it on, keep it, or leave it in a new spot.

Our goal is to release 500 decorated postcards into the Westerville area over the summer months. Help us spread the word - Take the Journey • Make Art Happen!

Westerville Public Library call for kid artist and writers

Westerville Public Library
126 S. State St.
Westerville, OH 43081

Linda Wilkins, 882-7277 ext. 164
Community Services/ Marketing February 28, 2006

Works by young writers and artists will go on display at the Library during Westerville’s April Arts Celebration

I live in a pickle-shaped house with mutant polka dots.
I woke up with no hands.
These “story starters” are among the ideas tossed around by members of ‘Tween the Lines, a writing club at the Westerville Public Library for young writers ages 9-12. Their older counterpart is the “Write in the Middle” writing group for middle schoolers in grades 6 through 8, also offered at the library. Both groups meet regularly, offering a way for young writers and artists to get acquainted with others their age who also love writing, storytelling and drawing. To showcase the works of these and any other authors and artists in grades 3-8, and to mark Westerville Arts Council’s April Celebration of the Arts, the library is putting out a call for written pieces and artwork to form a display called Kids Create! at the library during April.

Now through March 15, young writers and artists are invited to submit writings 500 words or less, and paintings, drawings or other visual art 11” x 17” or smaller, to be shown at the library. Participants will receive a registration gift and the chance to see their work on display. A Kids Create! reception for family, friends and the public is being planned for April 2.

Writers and artists aren’t required to be members of the ‘Tween the Lines or Write in the Middle groups in order to be a part of the April display, but the kids who come have fun chasing away writer’s block. They talk about ways to write good dialogue, techniques for building suspense and the best names to give characters. At meetings they break into a writing session and help each other with ideas. Since pictures tell a story also, art is welcome. Finally, they re-group and anyone can volunteer to share what they’ve worked on and get feedback. The upcoming Kids Create! display is extra incentive for the writers and artists. Their submissions will be incorporated into two ‘zines, small publications produced at the library, and the authors will receive a copy. An oversize version of the ‘zines will be part of the display. ‘Tween the Lines will meet March 9 and 23, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Write in the Middle will meet March 15 and 29, 6-8:30 p.m. New members are welcome.

Submissions for the Kids Create! display can be dropped off at the youth services area in the library or e-mailed to boneil@westervillelibrary.org. Entries can also be sent via the Library Link delivery service at the schools. For details call the library at 882-7277 ext. 4.

NOTE: Please let me know if you would like to speak firsthand with one of the young writers. Also, librarian Becky O’Neil would be available to comment on the writing groups.
Thanks, Linda
