Scholarships / Westerville Concert Band
The Westerville Concert Band awarded scholarships to a student from each of our high schools' instrumental music programs at our spring concert, April 23. I am attaching the speech that I gave at the concert in awarding the scholarships. I'd be glad to give you more information if needed. Thank you. Terri Siebert, Executive Board Chairperson, Westerville Concert Band
"Music is a lifelong pursuit. We in the Westerville Concert Band are testimony to such a statement. It is our desire to support and to encourage the love of music in our community’s youth by awarding a $100 scholarship to an instrumental music student from each of our 3 high schools, to be used to help continue their music studies. I would like to ask Kathleen Murray, Dustin May, and Tom Calhoun to come forward now to the stage.
Westerville is blessed with 3 excellent high school instrumental music programs. We’d like to thank James Defrancesco, band director at South, Dan Laciano, director at North, and Jason Jackson, band director at Central, for their assistance with these awards. Each selected a student from his program to be honored today.
Kathleen Murray is a senior string bass player at South. She plays in both the jazz band and the orchestra. Following graduation this June, Kathleen will continue her pursuit of music with a major in jazz studies at Michigan State University this fall.
Dustin May is a sophomore percussionist at North. He plays in the wind ensemble, the jazz orchestra, marching band, the pit orchestra for musicals and has filled in for the show choir, the Notables. Dustin is committed to excellence in his musical skills and performance.
Tom Calhoun is a senior percussionist at Central. He is currently the drum set player for the top jazz ensemble and is deeply involved in many aspects of music, including marching and concert bands. He is accomplished in piano as well. Tom will continue his passion for music at the Cuyahoga Community College Jazz Program in the fall.
Please join me in congratulating each of these fine young musicians. We wish them the best in their continued pursuit of music."
