Spokesperson: Jan Fedorenko

What connections do we already enjoy?
Reflections
Concerts at the school, college and community levels
Art Shows and Galleries
Theatre at all levels

The committee believed that there was a strong venue of talents, but it was more an issue of putting all of the pieces together, and developing a stronger awareness of the activities.

How can all of the arts venues support each other?

In the Brainstorming session for Education we talked about bridging the gaps between the schools and the community. How can we all support each other?

Some ideas for ongoing support and recognition of the community talents:
• Recognizing artistic contributions by individuals at City Council Meetings Monthly
• Recognizing Outstanding Leadership in the arts (this may or may not be individual artists)
• Getting corporate sponsorship for endorsing and recognizing outstanding individuals
• Create a logo that endorses the events. Recognize/or highlight an event monthly. We would need to decide the criteria for the recognition.
• Arts Council Representation and community and school events to educate the attendees of all the opportunities available in Westerville
• Create an insert to school and community programs that could be handed out at all events, or become part of the printed program
• Provide opportunities for cross over with age groups/disciplines. Students and artists learning from each other.

Suggestions for Arts Month
• Create a Learning Exchange between artists, secondary and elementary students sponsored at a local high school for a day, or perhaps a Friday, Saturday 2 day event. This could also be a workshop at Otterbein??? The exchange would allow artists and students to work side by side.
• Create a celebration of Arts for a day at Polaris. Ongoing arts activities in action, student and artists/organizations working side by side, performances etc.. a day long event.

2 Comments:

  • I find this laughable, having a meeting about doing art is a great thing to do, if the organization has a track record that is positive. I am a person who believes in the following, "You Talk the Talk, but do you Walk the Walk?" That was from the movies Full Metal Jacket, I must give them credit as that is the ethical thing to do. I gave up the surburban life and many creature comforts to do my art, and I openly shared what I have found with other artists who need a resource they can not yet afford.

Resources are where you find them, but most resources don't want artist, they want money. So why can't the city give a tax abadement for a limited amount of abadement per event, a smart business would be supporting the arts year round then.

Did anyone see the CBS Sunday Morning piece on "Keeping Austin Weird"? Does Westerville have a singular focus that a campaign like the one in Austin that can be followed?

Why not celebrate the Life of Wild Bill Bates, or the Purple House? How about a Tuba Band Concert at the Rotary Park?

  • Again, I say DO Something, Anything, to show the artists that the council is doing something for the local artists.
